Stamford Firm Awards Grant to SoundWaters for Student Science Program
The program brings hands-on science studies for Stamford middle school students.

An announcement from SoundWaters.
SoundWaters has been awarded a third $50,000 grant by Tronox Limited (NYSE: TROX) for hands-on science studies for 6th-grade students in Stamford’s public schools.
Tronox is a Stamford-based global leader in processing minerals and marketing products like titanium oxide pigment used to add brightness and durability in paint, plastics, paper and other everyday consumables.
The funding extends for a third year an outreach that immersed 1,150 students at six middle schools in environmental studies last year in their own classrooms and in the field--the Teaching Aquarium and Learning Lab at SoundWaters Coastal Center and in outdoor laboratories at Cove Island Park.

Winifred Hamilton, Stamford’s public schools superintendent, described the studies as “an important component” in the curriculum, giving students the opportunity to conduct experiments utilizing real scientific equipment.
An evaluation at the end of the academic year showed a significant improvement in the students’ understanding of the impact of conservation, the importance of the ecosystem and scientific measurement techniques.
A workshop for the middle school teachers preceded the introduction of the initiative.
Tronox employees also volunteer at the Coastal Education Center each year for a day. Last year they worked on landscaping, painted the porch at the center, cleaned up trash, updated the sailboat rack and wound up the day with an evening sail on Long Island Sound aboard the schooner SoundWaters.
