Stamford Photo Club’s ‘The Magic of Light’ Exhibition Opens May 4

The exhibition will be on display during the month of May at The Palace Theatre.

STAMFORD, CT - From Stamford Photography Club: In photography and theater, light determines all of those things.

That’s why members of the Stamford Photography Club chose the theme ‘The Magic of Light,’ for its first ever group show in downtown Stamford, which will be on display Saturday, May 4-Friday, May 31 at the Palace Theatre, 61 Atlantic St. An opening reception will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, May 9.

“The SPC is thrilled to be presenting a group photography exhibition at the Palace Theater,” said Sally Harris, president of the club. “Artistic collaborations such as this illustrates what a vibrant art community Stamford has. The magic of light was chosen to highlight the importance light has to both theater and photography.”

More than 30 photographers have been juried into the show by Tatiana Mori, executive director of the Greenwich Arts Council. Many of the photographers have held shows around the country including Mike and Sally Harris of Greenwich, Sandy Gennrich of Stamford and Steve Labkoff of Stamford.

A small group of photography enthusiasts founded the Stamford Camera Club in 1945. It was later renamed The Photography Club of Lower Fairfield County and is now known as the Stamford Photography Club. The organization has grown to be a leading photography club in the area attracting members from Fairfield County in Connecticut, and Westchester County in New York.

The club, which is comprised of people of all ages and from various walks of life, including college students, working and retired lawyers, bankers, teachers, scientists, journalists, etc.—meets twice a month for lectures and competitions and also offers field trips. The club always welcomes new members.

“One of my favorite memories made during my membership in the club was a field trip we took to take photos at a local stable,” recalls Darien resident Nicole Rivard. “Another member reminded me to look for the light that morning, and one of the photos I took in the barn that day won first place in a competition. It’s been life-changing getting tips from these passionate photographers.”

The Palace Theatre, a 1,580-seat Thomas Lamb-designed vaudeville house, was acclaimed as “Connecticut’s Most Magnificent” when it opened in 1927. It was restored and re-opened in 1983 for live theatre, opera, dance, comedy and concerts, plus art exhibitions in the Sackler Gallery.
