
Shin splints can seem like they show up out of nowhere.
One day, you’re starting a new running routine or adding more miles to your walk. Then a few workouts later, your shins are starting to ache.
“That pain is often called shin splints, or medial tibial stress syndrome,” says Jordan Gruskay, MD, a sports medicine orthopedic surgeon with Hartford HealthCare’s Connecticut Orthopaedic Institute. “It usually happens when the muscles, tendons and bone tissue around your shinbone are under too much repeated stress.”
