Amtrak: Train Struck 'Trespasser' On Track At Mystic Station Saturday
A man who "appeared to be waiting for a train" suffered serious injuries after being "somehow struck" by a train, Stonington police said.

MYSTIC, CT — A man struck by a train at the Amtrak station Saturday suffered what police said was a serious leg injury and head trauma. Stonington police described him as a person waiting for the train. Amtrak described him as a trespasser on the track.
Amtrak spokesperson Jason Abrams told Patch that train number 140 en route to Springfield from Washington, D. C. "came into contact" with an "individual who was trespassing on the track." Abrams said there were "no reported injuries to the 108 passengers or crew onboard."
Abrams said Amtrak is working with local law enforcement to investigate the incident.

Stonington Police Department Deputy Chief Todd Olson said it was around 8 p.m. when the man "was somehow struck" by the train he said was "slowing to pick up passengers" at the Mystic station on Roosevelt Avenue. Olson said the man, "conscious and alert on the scene," was taken to L&M Hospital for treatment.
Olson said the train strike is under investigation.

Abrams, making note of the description of the man as a trespasser, said that according to the Federal Railroad Administration, "trespassing along railroad rights-of-way is the leading cause of rail-related deaths in America."
"These incidents can affect everyone involved—those who are injured or die and their families, our train crews, and our passengers," Abrams said. "They also serve as critical reminders about the importance of obeying the law and of exercising extreme caution around railroad tracks and crossings."
