Dancing with our hero's veteran Amie Blum speaks of her dancing expereience at the Fred Astairne Dance Studio
“Dance does not select who may participate, it asks only that the body
surrender to the impulses it feels when movement is proposed.”

Two months ago I was approached by a coworker about an event, called Dancing with Our Heroes. He explained to me that the event matched up veterans with professional dance instructors, who then taught you a routine, which you would perform at a competition. Soon after, I found out that this event was to raise money to build a Fisher House next to the VA in West Haven. They provide a home away from home for military families to be close to their soldier during hospitalization for an illness, disease or injury. I feel very fortunate to be a part of a cause so meaningful. We (soldiers) focus on the mission ahead of us, never the injuries that could be sustained while protecting this wonderful country. The mission of the Fisher House is so important and I hope that the Dancing with Our Heroes Gala brings more awareness to the needs of injured soldiers returning from combat.
Upon entrance into the Mystic Fred Astaire, I was rather surprised. The studio was very clean, the instructors were more than welcoming and the atmosphere was just perfect. The beauty of dance surrounded me. The instructors performed exquisite pieces, giving us veterans an example of the types of dancing we could potentially do at the Gala. What did I decide to pick? Salsa, of course! The one dance, which would challenge me in every possible way. First and foremost, I have always been quite the tomboy. However, since joining the military in 2004 I have strived to excel at every obstacle thrown my way. Never in a million years did I think dancing would be one of them! However, I am certain that I can overcome anything I set my mind to.

My experience at the Mystic Fred Astaire thus far, has been nothing short of amazing. Not only am I working with one of the most remarkable dance instructors, Vadim Asmolov, but I am also taking advantage of the additional classes that are offered. Practice makes perfect, isn’t that how the saying goes? I have been working very hard on my salsa routine and will continue to do so. I want to make everyone around me proud, including my dance instructor Vadim who has been working diligently to help me perfect our routine.
I am currently in my second month of dancing and I have learnt so much thus far. Dancing is a means of escape, a means of expression. The more practice you are willing to put into it, the more you will get out of it. Dancing is great for fitness and really helps to build your confidence. There is always something new to learn and no barriers what-so-ever. Dance is an art form that is presented in such a glorious and magnificent way. Engaging in dance has allowed me to meet many new people and establish friendships that will last a lifetime.
In closing, I am very grateful to be a part of the Mystic Fred Astaire and am honored to have been chosen as one of their heroes to partake in the Dancing with Our Heroes Gala on November 10th, 2013.
