An 11-year-old German shepherd who was part of the Stonington Police Department's first K-9 team has died.

STONINGTON, CT - Fritz, an 11-year-old German shepherd who was part of the Stonington Police Department's first K-9 team, has died, the New London Day reported. He had served in the department from 2008 until his retirement in 2014.
Fritz was escorted to an animal hospital by a police cruiser and euthanized Monday after suffering with health issues, according to the New London Day. A procession of cruisers from area departments subsequently escorted his body to Westerly to be cremated.
Fritz was born in Hungary and purchased by the department from a Pennsylvania kennel, the New London Day reported. During his first shift, he was able to track down a man who had fled into a wooded area following a domestic dispute.
