Artist in Residence: David Monteiro

The art collection at the Ocean House from the lobby down to the OH! Spa and Gallery Foyer, portrays a range of distinctive styles including realism, naturalism, impressionism. To continue our desire to share great works of art, we host an Artist in Residence series in collaboration with the Mystic Seaport Maritime Gallery. Every week an artist, selected for their unparalleled talent and national recognition, will take residence next door to the Ocean House in our Artist’s Cottage.

A cocktail reception will be hosted Friday evenings and the artist in residence will showcase some of their work in the Winter Garden. On Friday, Saturday and Sunday, the artist in residence will work in a public area of their choice, allowing guests to observe them for two hours. Each Saturday and Sunday morning, Ocean House guests and interested outside patrons are invited to participate in an hour-long demonstration or hands-on workshop given by the artist in residence.

Artist

David Monteiro is a native of Plymouth, MA. As a child, he showed an aptitude for drawing and creativity that became more evident throughout his adolescent years. He continued his education at Massachusetts College of Art where he graduated with a Bachelors Degree of Fine Art. Shortly after graduating, David began a successful career as proprietor of Monteiro Design, a graphic design studio. Aside from his artistic talent as a graphic artist, he excelled in technical and “free hand” illustrations.

Later in life, David developed a passion to paint. He recalled that his education at “Mass Art” taught him to the traditional style of painting using primary colors. Today, David’s palette consists of only 5 colors of which he claims creates a sense of balance to the painting. Over the past several years, David has advanced his training by attending several plein air workshops with various influential artists.

“Creating an Oil Painting Start to Finish” – The award-winning Maritime Gallery artist will demonstrate the beginning phase of creating an oil painting on Saturday, and the finishing phase of an oil painting on Sunday with the presentation of a completed painting – varnished and framed. David is accomplished in both studio and the plein art experience. – Come watch as the artist demonstrates his fresh and vibrant painting technique turning blank canvas into a personal vision. Learn how he creates works of art in the studio and on location. A unique opportunity to see how a painting is created by a master.
