Fireside Stories, Seuss on the Loose, Invasive Insects of CT Forests

Those are just three of the programs offered this week at Mystic's Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center.

This week at the Nature Center:

Tuesday: Pequotsepos Hikers: Perry Preserve, 9:30-11 a.m.
Perry Preserve, North Anguilla Road, Stonington
Perry Preserve (AvaloniaLandConservancy), Stonington. Members are FREE and nonmembers are $10. Trailhead is on N. Anguilla Rd, Stonington, one half mile south of Rt 184.

Thursday: Invasive Insects of CT Forests, 7-8 p.m.
Get the latest information on some of the “new” insects affecting Connecticut forests, including two species of invasive ambrosia beetles that were surveyed locally last summer. We will discuss the biology, trapping protocol, and potential impact of these invasive forest pests, as well as others such as the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) and the Asian long-horned beetle (ALB). Presenter: Katherine Dugas of the CT Agricultural Experiment Station. $5.95 member / $7 non-member

Friday Afternoon Artists, 3:30-6 p.m.
Drop off your 8-12 year olds for an afternoon exploration with art inspired by nature. Each session we will hike, observe, journal and create. Opportunities to learn about specific artists and naturalists will be included. This interdisciplinary class will be challenging, educational and fun. Ages 8-12 $17 member / $20 non-member

Friday: Fireside Stories, 4-5 p.m.
Every Friday we’ll have the fire going and stories to share for children of all ages. Each week will be filled with different stories, rhymes and songs, and the magic of a crackling fire! Ages: Families with children up to age 8. Led by: Amy Stich Free for Members, $5 Non-Members

Saturday: Seuss on the Loose! 10 a.m. - noon
Join us for a fun morning celebrating Dr. Seuss’s birthday! We’ll read The Lorax, make Oobleck, have a Cat in the Hat-inspired scavenger hunt and learn about the importance of trees in our world. Led by Amy Stich. Family. $5.95 member / $7 non-member
