Fireworks To Celebrate 50 Years Of Mystic Aquarium

A Greater Mystic Chamber of Commerce event this weekend will include a chili fest, live music, and fireworks.

MYSTIC, CT — Fireworks are returning to Mystic to celebrate Mystic Aquarium's 50th anniversary. The event begins Saturday at 1 p.m. at Mystic River Park which will honor "half a century of Mystic Aquarium's contribution to marine conservation and education," according to a press release.

Susette Tibus, president and CEO of Mystic Aquarium, will lead the ceremonies, accompanied by "esteemed local dignitaries and some surprise guests."

Following the formal ceremony, a chili fest featuring at least ten local eateries is on the docket, with Bank & Bridge Brewery, the reigning champions from last year, set to defend their title.

The fireworks will be at 7:30 p.m. near the Seaport Museum. Prime viewing spots include Mystic Seaport, the vicinity of the bascule bridge, and along River Road.

Also, the Groton Police Department has announced traffic restrictions and no-parking restrictions for the day of the event on the Groton-side downtown Mystic area, specifically in the area of the following roads:

  • Vehicular traffic on River Road will be northbound only starting at 7:30 PM from the intersection of Starr Street north to Bindloss Road, subject to complete closure for pedestrian safety
  • There will be temporary “NO PARKING” signs placed on the west side of River Road between Starr Street and Bindloss Road
  • There will be temporary “NO PARKING” signs placed on the north and south sides of Clift Street from Pearl Street west to around the Clift Street curve

Drivers, pedestrians, and spectators should be mindful of higher-than-normal vehicle and pedestrian traffic in the downtown Mystic area, police said.
