Highway Guys Work To Feed Hungry Kids

The Weekender Backpack Program at Pawcatuck Neighborhood Center does one very important thing: makes sure hungry kids have meals to eat when they’re not in school.

When last we spoke with PNC we learned that more than 350 kids in Stonington and North Stonington are eligible for the program. That’s a lot of kids to see go without. So to help, Stonington highway department employees are sponsoring a food drive this Saturday June 15 from 9 to noon to fill those backpacks. The ‘Father’s Day Food Drive’ will be held at Stop & Shop in Pawcautck.

“The highway guys will be there near the entrances of the store collecting the donations,” DPW director Joe Bragaw said.

The backpacks are filled with all the fixings for a few meals. So, as was explained by Kimberly B. Buck at PNC, there are very specific food needs including boxes of hard and soft taco shells, taco sauce, PopTarts, granola bars, string cheese and chocolate pudding cups. And of course, PNC is always in need of important food items including proteins like peanut butter and tuna fish, soups, cereals, jams, jellies and canned fruits.

This Stonington highway workers ‘Father’s Day Food Drive’ is another in a series of PNC-sponsored events being held in June as part of Hunger Awareness Month. The next event is June 20, a Dine-For-A-Cause event (and basket raffle!) at the 99 Restaurant in Westerly. (See attached flyer and voucher).
