MYSTIC,CT — St. Edmund’s Pipes and Drums announced the appointment of local Mystic resident, Madeline Kotfer, to the role of Pipe Sergeant earlier this month. Kotfer was appointed by Pipe Major Baird Welch-Collins. The role of Pipe Sergeant is to assist the Pipe Major in leading the band.
Kotfer is native to the area and a 2022 URI B.S. of Health Studies graduate. She began playing the bagpipes in 2019 and made a quick transition from the practice chanter to a full set of Scottish Highland Bagpipes within the same year. Kotfer is a founding member of St. Edmund’s Pipes and Drums and has served on its executive board for the past year. Kotfer has competed across New England with the band and also as a Grade 4 solo piper.

Kotfer has previous musical experience playing the violin, guitar, and piano. Her particular interest in the bagpipes comes from her Scottish heritage as her grandmother immigrated to the United States from Scotland in her 20’s. “The bagpipes are completely different from any other instrument, but the challenge makes it even more rewarding” stated Kotfer. She looks forward to embracing her new role in the band.
