Obituary: Patricia H. Vargas, 87, Of Stonington

Pat was a voracious reader and lifelong learner; she loved and was loved.

Patricia H. (Faulkner) Vargas, 87, of Stonington, CT predeceased by her husband Austin A. Vargas, fell asleep in the Lord on Thursday, August 30th. May her memory be eternal!

Born in Northampton, MA she was the daughter of the late Helen O’Reilly and was a long time resident of Stonington.

Pat was a graduate of Smith College in Northampton, MA and obtained a master in Library Science from the University of Rhode Island. She was a Librarian for many years with the Groton Public Library where she retired in 1995.

Pat was a voracious reader and lifelong learner. She had many interests including a love of adventure and travel, having met her husband in Indonesia while teaching, to rounding the globe multiple times; to playing tennis and golf, drinking wine and eating good food (especially ice cream!). She loved and was loved.

She is survived by her three sons, Joseph Vargas and his wife, Sharon, of Stonington, David Vargas and his wife, Catherine, of Rocky Hill and Michael Vargas of Stonington; eight grandchildren, Andrea Vargas, Amanda Magliari (Saverio), Natasha Bouley (Steven), Nicholas Vargas, Jennifer Bray (John), Jessica Vargas, Angela Connolly (Graham) and Katelyn Vargas; and five great-grandchildren. Pat was predeceased by her two sisters, Dottie O’Connell and Peggy Stephens and by her long time companion Charlie Lathrop.

A visiting hour will be held Wednesday, September 5th from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., followed by a service at 11 a.m. at the Mystic Funeral Home, located on Route 1 in Mystic. Following the service, burial will follow at St. Mary Cemetery in Stonington.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made in memory of Pat to either the Alzheimer Association (www.alz.org) or the Stonington Free Library (www.stoningtonfreelibrary.com).
