A an art project completed by Pawcatuck Middle School students will soon be sent to a museum in Japan.

STONINGTON, CT — As part of a project for their art class, seventh-grade students from Pawcatuck Middle School created 1,000 origami cranes that now hang from the school's cafeteria ceiling, the Westerly Sun reported. After being displayed for a bit, the project will be sent to a museum in Hiroshima, Japan.

According to the Westerly Sun, the project was inspired by “Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes” by Eleanor Coerr. The students all read the story and completed the project over the course of several weeks.

The students collectively completed 1,000 cranes under the guidance of their art teacher, Diane Gallo, according to the Westerly Sun. The project will soon be shipped to the Hiroshima Peace Museum, complete with a message for world peace from the school.
