Connecticut Has Some Odd Street Names

The online site OnlyInYourState.com has selected a dozen streets in the Nutmeg State with unusual, bizarre or even ironic names.

Have you ever wondered about the origin of certain unusual street names you encounter in your travels?

The online site OnlyInYourState.com recently posted a list of a dozen "crazy street names in Connecticut that will leave you baffled."

Some of my personal favorites did not make the list: Bread and Milk Street in Coventry (obviously named by someone panicking about an oncoming storm), Lois Lane in Enfield (no doubt a Superman fan), Butts Lane in Norwich (not sure if they meant cigarettes or glutei maximi, but either way, not good) or Skunk Misery Road in Higganum (if you've ever struck a skunk, you know the misery).

With that said, author Taylor Ellis lists her 12 strangest, with a few words of explanation for each:

  1. Skungamaug Road, Tolland ("The cemetery goes by the same name. To be honest, I'm not even sure how you're supposed to pronounce that.")
  2. Tootin Hill Road, Simsbury ("Why not Quiet Hill? I have a friend who still giggles at this one every time.")
  3. Yellow Yellow Circle, Middletown (off Yellow Road, which also intersects with Yellow Birch Road, Yellow Green Road, Yellow Hill Drive, Yellow Orange Circle and Yellow Pine Circle.)
  4. Rainbow Road, East Granby ("Is the fact that this road is a speedway a coincidence? Or is this the real life Mario Kart?")
  5. Roast Meat Hill Road, Killingworth ("Supposedly this street got its name from a farm fire where the cows were trapped inside.")
  6. Satan's Kingdom Road, New Hartford ("Oddly enough, it splits into two dead ends.")
  7. Lady Slipper Lane, Bristol ("Maybe this is where Cinderella lost her shoe?")
  8. Eleven O'Clock Road, Weston (intersects with High Noon Road)
  9. BMW Drive, Griswold ("You don't actually have to drive a BMW to get on this road.")
  10. Horse Heaven Road, Washington ("Apparently, if you're a horse, this is the place to be.")
  11. Memory Lane, Fairfield ("Just off of Lovers Lane, it seems like a lot of life happens here.")
  12. Drury Lane, West Hartford ("It is not confirmed whether or not the muffin man actually lives here.")

Do you know of other Connecticut roads that deserve to be on this list? Tell us in the comments section below.
