Connecticut Weather: New Details On Jose's Impact On The State

A Tropical Storm Watch and a Hazardous Weather Outlook have been issued for parts of the state. Here are the latest updates.

A Tropical Storm Watch remains in effect for the immediate coast of southern Connecticut as Hurricane Jose is expected to pass close enough to the state to produce tropical storm-force winds, heavy rain and flooding.

For areas inland in southern Connecticut, a Hazardous Weather Outlook has been issued for “strong gusty winds and heavy rain associated with tropical cyclone Jose.” Hartford and Tolland counties are without any advisory, but they are expected to see periods of heavy rain and some gusty winds too.

The weather is expected to deteriorate in Connecticut beginning Tuesday night and into early Wednesday, which is when the wind and rain will be at its worst. Southeast Connecticut will see the greatest impacts, as it’s closest to Jose.

The National Weather Service said Monday that Jose will pass to the southeast of Connecticut late Tuesday night into Wednesday. For coastal areas of the state “potential impacts of tropical storm force winds, coastal flooding, and heavy rainfall” are expected.

“The best chance for tropical storm force winds and heavy rain will be across eastern Long Island and southeast Connecticut. Minor to moderate coastal flooding is also expected, with widespread water levels of 1 to 2 feet and locally up to 3 feet above ground level possible,” the weather service states.

Storm surge up to 2 feet above ground is possible beginning early Tuesday morning, the weather service states. A total of 1-3 inches of rain is expected in this area.

For New London County, wind gusts up to 45 mph are possible, and between 2-4 inches of rain are expected, the weather service states.

Interior sections of southern Connecticut are also expected to see gusty winds and between 1-2 inches of rain late Tuesday into Wednesday. The weather service adds that tropical storm conditions are possible there too.

Northern Connecticut is expected to see winds between 15-25 mph and between 1 and 2 inches of rain also. The winds will be much less of an issue in Hartford and Tolland counties.

NBC Connecticut Meteorologist Ryan Hanrahan said, "No change to the forecast this morning. Squally showers tomorrow as the outer bands of Jose move in and then peak winds Tuesday night and Wednesday morning in SE CT. A few power outages are possible."
