Do you know the essential difference between modern and postmodern architecture?
We invite you to compare your answer to the words and works of these outstanding proponents of the two trends. You may be surprised, and you will surely be entertained as Tim Nichols, AIA Detroit, owner of Nichols Architects, guides you through the twists and turns of the two tendencies that came to dominate tastes and appetites, not only here, but throughout the world, during the last century and up to the present day.

If you wonder how each developed a distinct voice, or if, on the other hand, a lack of vitality in much of today’s architecture troubles you, come to Stonington Harbor Yacht Club on March 21.
Mr. Nichols studied architecture at Princeton University in the 1960’s and Lawrence Technological University in the 2000’s. Thus in both his academic studies and professional career, he spans the period of postmodernism from its emergence to the dominant position it occupies today.
Having built projects on permafrost in Naknek, Alaska, on granite cliffs overlooking Alexandria Bay from the Canadian shore and on clay slopes in the Rouge River basin near Detroit, he brings to the talk both practical insight and a critical theoretical approach.
