Stonington Police Issue Alert About Bitcoin Scam
Police are saying residents should be on the lookout for a scam that involves depositing cash into Bitcoin kiosks.
STONINGTON, CT — Police are warning residents about a scam that involves accusing the target of a crime, then sending them money via Bitcoin or gift cards.
Police posted the following on Facebook:
"SCAM ALERT: Stonington Police Officers have taken numerous complaints of citizens being tricked into taking their cash and depositing it into Bitcoin Kiosk’s. The Scammers will call you or talk to you via the internet accusing you of a crime and convince you that in order to fix the issue you need to send them money via Bitcoin or in gift cards. Scammers will do everything they can to maintain contact with you until you have done what they have asked, which in the end was to steal your money. If you have any questions or think you may be a victim of a scam, call us. Don’t give these scammers your information. Call us first so we can help you before a financial loss occurs. 860-599-4411."
