Stonington's Seacoast Mushrooms Awarded Federal Grant

The grower of gourmet mushrooms has received a federal grant to help purchase a solar power system.

STONINGTON, CT — Seacoast Mushrooms recently received a $280,000 federal grant from the Rural Energy America Program.

The grant will help the Stonington business install a $600,000, 199.6-kilowatt solar system.

U.S. Rep. Joe Courtney and Under Secretary for Rural Development Dr. Basil Gooden were on hand to "celebrate this important milestone for a locally owned, veteran run business," according to the Town of Stonington.

Mushrooms are one of the most sustainable foods. Seacoast is a purveyor of gourmet mushrooms which "are grown inside damp shipping containers that have environments painstakingly monitored to bring in the right amount of fresh air and humidity," according to the Seacoast website. The farm grows up to 10 varieties and produces between 600 and 800 pounds of mushrooms per week.
