Did you know there use to be a theater in downtown Mystic? I kid you not; just take a look at this vintage photograph of “Mystic Day” on the River from August 1949.
In the photograph, provided by the , Strand Theater is the building on the right built over the river. If you look closely you can read the sign to see what was playing on the August day the photograph was taken. According to the society it featured, “Any Number Can” and starred Alexis Smith.
On the left next to the river is a newsstand and the Newbury Block.

According to the society the crowds of people gathered in town wasn’t just normal tourist season traffic. People gathered downtown to celebrate the Stonington Tercentennial. Even the stores, Noyes’ Dry Goods and Kinney’s Jewelers, were decorated for the celebration.
