87-Year-Old Woman Facing Eviction Appeals Judge's Decision
A social worker testified the woman was the victim of emotional abuse and neglect by her relatives.
STRATFORD, CT — An 87-year-old Stratford woman is appealing a judge's decision to evict her from her home of more than 50 years, according to the Connecticut Post. Maria Michaels was told to vacate the Rosebrook Drive residence by April and may have to pay rent in the interim after her family said she had become a burden following an ankle injury, the Post reported.
During the trial, social worker Martha Marchelli said Michaels was the victim of emotional abuse and neglect by her relatives, but that Marchelli took no action to address the situation, according to the Post. Michaels sold the home to her nephew and his wife in 1999 under the condition that she would live there as long as she was not a burden, the Post reported. The nephew, Jan Hlinka, and his wife, Beata Hlinka, raised their four children in the home and filed papers about a year ago to evict Michaels, according to the Post.
