"Ancestral Voices" is a warm family comedy. According to The New York Times, "The hybrid Mr. Gurney has created is as elegantly faceted as a marquise diamond."

Described as "a beautiful chamber work," "Ancestral Voices" tells the story of five members of an upper-class family in Buffalo, New York between the years of 1935 and 1942.

As Gurney often does, he exposes the cracks in the foundation of a wealthy Protestant family when grandmother abandons grandfather for another man. Narrated by the son, Eddie, the family story reflects the atmosphere of the city and country in general.
