In the Details: Bolted

Envy the simple life of the inanimate

The theme of my poems this week is: utility.

One of my husband's favorite books is Donald Norman's "The Design of Everyday Things." He always refers to it when we find ourselves pushing on a door that is meant to be pulled.

Bolted

I imagine life might be
Kinder if I were a bird. Maybe
A crow. Or better yet,
A plant, like
The sweet corn.

Or maybe I'd like
To just be
Husk, furling and drying,
Or wet earth
Pushing at
Stalks and holding up
Fences.

Better
Still
I'd say:
Scarecrow,
Bolted to the pole--

Eyes fixed to the East
And smiling;
With no need
To change
This flannel shirt or
Ever shop at Zappo's.
