This week, I am writing on the theme of "beauty." Next week's theme will be "utility."

Littleness

Last week I said to my husband,
(After a long day of tedious
Housework, much of which involved
Moving plastic containers and outgrown
Clothes up and down and through
Containers of our house we call
Rooms):
"You know, is it OK if, for the rest
Of today, I believe that I am
Just a dust particle
In a big universe?
"And that nothing I do
Matters at all, not these
Dishes or packing these
Lunchboxes or trying hard to
Say the right thing in
Just the right way?"
And he was
OK with that and I dropped
My body into the
Virus and fell into nine
Episodes of Downton Abbey
And crawled inside a fuzzy
Head until
Yesterday when
I was in the backyard and I noticed
The neighbor's son was filling in his bones, yet still
Bounding around on those last moments of
Littleness, and I stood up and felt then I was
Ready to be
Big enough
To hang sheets on the line again.
