Red foxes are widespread in Connecticut, according to the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection. The animals often live near human homes and communities that have food, water and cover. They inhabit yards, parks and golf courses, and are rarely aggressive toward people.

The presence of a fox should not be perceived as a problem and foxes need not be feared, according to the department. However, if a fox is stumbling, staggering, walking in circles, dragging a limb or hind end, or aggressively approaching people or pets, those nearby should immediately contact police, animal control or the state dispatch line, which is 860-424-3333.
