Storm Debris Pickup To Continue Sunday, Monday In Stratford

Public works is asking residents to bag debris or cut it into 3-foot lengths and tie it, although larger branches will be collected as well.

STRATFORD, CT — Collection of yard debris created by Tropical Storm Isaias has been extended to Sunday and Monday after pickup was initially scheduled for Saturday. The storm last week downed trees, blocked roads, and damaged cars and houses, in addition to causing widespread power outages.

Public works is asking residents to bag debris or cut it into 3-foot lengths and tie it, although larger branches will be collected as well, Mayor Laura Hoydick said in a Facebook post Saturday. One crew is picking up trees and large debris, and another is collecting bags and small debris. The mayor originally said trash pickup would be delayed until Tuesday to accommodate the additional service, but issued a correction Sunday clarifying the two collections would take place concurrently.

As of about 4:30 a.m. Sunday, only 2 percent of United Illuminating Co. customers in Stratford —or 555 customers — were still without power, according to the company. The amount of customers experiencing an outage hoovered around 40 percent throughout the week and at one point was as high as 68 percent, but by Saturday it had dropped to 7 percent.
