Stratford, Bunnell Students Win DAR American History Award

The students were selected by their schools to win the Daughters of the American Revolution American History Award.

STRATFORD, CT — (Contributed): El Youngquist, a senior from Stratford High School and Benjamin Laros, a senior from Bunnell High School were chosen by their schools to receive the Sarah Riggs Humphreys-Mary Silliman Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution Outstanding Work in American History certificate and bronze medal for their excellence in American history and overall academic character.

Youngquist plans to attend Cornell University and major in Hospitality Management. She became interested in history through the American Girl Dolls and loved reading the historical doll stories. This made learning about history fun.

Laros plans to attend UCONN and major in education. He wants to pursue a career in teaching.

Cheryl Basztura, Chair, SRH-MS Chapter American History Committee, said these students represent this nation’s future leaders. She added that the DAR promotes American history throughout the year and encourages everyone to be more informed about their heritage.

She also thanked the American History Awards Committee and the area schools that participate in this annual event for recognizing their high school students who excel in American history.

The DAR is a non-profit women’s service organization dedicated to historic preservation, education and patriotism. Any woman over 18 who can prove lineal descent to an ancestor who served in the American Revolution is a prospective member.
