Stratford Library Celebrating LGBTQ+ Pride With Range Of Programs

Offerings include Transgender 101 and selections from "The Gay Marriage Plays."

STRATFORD, CT — It may be closed to the public, but the Stratford Library is still busy as ever with the nationwide observance of Pride 2020, a series of online programs and events to celebrate the history and accomplishments of the LGBTQ+ community. All library events, sponsored by the Stratford Library Association Board and the Square One Theatre Co., are free and open to the public.

Selections from “The Gay Marriage Plays” will be performed by actors from Stratford’s Square One Theatre Co. from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday, and will be available on the library’s YouTube channel.

Rainbow Family Storytime & Craft will take place online via Zoom from 11 a.m. to noon Saturday. Participants are invited to enjoy LGBTQ+-friendly stories, songs and activities to celebrate all the different kinds of families in the Stratford community. The first 20 registrants will be able to pick up a Grab & Go Kit for completing a tote bag art project. Register via www.stratfordlibrary.org or by calling 203-385-4164.

Jillian is a 59-year-old transgender woman who transitioned four years ago. She will present Transgender 101 online via Zoom from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday. Jillian is an advocate for the transgender community and will openly discuss the coming out and transition processes. A question-and-answer session will follow her talk.

The Pride 2020 selection for the library’s monthly Books Over Coffee discussion group will be Jacqueline Woodson’s powerful novel that explores sexual identity, “Red at the Bone.” It will be held online via Zoom from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday.

Pride Month Trivia Night is set for 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday. Participants can test their knowledge of LGBTQ+ pop culture with four rounds of ten questions each. Prizes will be awarded to the top three teams. Email slaask@stratfordlibarry.org for a Zoom invite.

Share Your Pride Story! A story, message, poem, drawing or photo is requested from LGBTQ+ members who wish to share their personal story. It will be posted on the library’s online gallery as part of the Pride 2020 celebration. Stories can be submitted throughout the month by direct messaging on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter.
