I-91 Speed Limit Being Lowered in Springfield

Highway construction has forced DOT officials to reduce speeds on the highway.

Travelers on Interstate 91 in Springfield, Mass. will soon be forced to slow down, or pay a hefty price.

Construction work on a viaduct has prompted the Massachusetts Department of Transportation to reduce the speed limit on a segment of the highway, the DOT said in a statement.

Beginning Tuesday, Aug. 18, the speed limit between Route 20/Plainfield Street and Broad Street will be reduced from 50 to 40 miles an hour. The speed limit for the area approaching that section will be reduced to 45 miles an hour, the statement said.

The new limits will be in effect on both the northbound and southbound sides of the highway, and will be strictly enforced by police. A speeding ticket in a work zone carries a double fine.

“Public safety is paramount and these restrictions will protect motorists and those working in the construction zone on I-91,” the statement said.
