Suffield Plans to Expand Town Landfill

The Department of Energy and Environmental Protection will take public comments on the application to open up extra acreage.

The Town of Suffield is close to final plans to expand the landfill on Mountain Road.

If approved next month, the town would begin to use the western portion of the 95 acre property for construction debris, according to Suffield Town contractor Jack Muska. It would skim off the top of the 10 acre portion and use two acres at a time to last the town about 40 years into the future.

The proposed usage is not expected to have an “appreciable effect” on natural resources in the area, including Mountain Brook, according to the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection.

The landfill on the mountain in West Suffield has several portions: the residential dumping transfer station and the larger construction debris area.

“The transfer station for residents won’t be affected,” Muska said.

Muska said 3,000 tons of debris from within Suffield at $100 ton is currently dumped at the debris site. At the current rate of use, the site will be used up in three to four years.

The $95,000 an acre it could cost to open the site would be covered initially by a grant of $180,000, said Muska, making the first five to seven years accounted for. The town will have to decide how to fund the future years.

The DEEP has tentatively approved the plans without requiring the town to take waste from outside areas, Muska said. But the town could charge neighboring towns and take on the debris.
