Suffield Police to Crack Down On School Bus Traffic Violators

Police plan to crack down on motorists who violate the law by passing standing school buses with red lights flashing.

SUFFIELD, CT — In response to recent complaints about motorists passing standing school buses, the Suffield Police Department has announced it will take measures to enforce the state statutes.

State law requires the operator of any vehicle or motor vehicle to stop at least 10 feet from the front or rear of a school bus when the bus is displaying flashing red lights, except when directed otherwise by a traffic officer. The fine for the first violation is $470, police said.

The police department will be conducting random patrols utilizing marked, unmarked, and non-traditional police vehicles to follow school buses to aid in enforcing the statute, police said.
