Suffield Retirement Commission Approves Pension Investment Rebalance

Two unanimous votes shift the pension portfolio toward fixed income and authorize another transfer if a Treasury threshold is met.

Suffield's Retirement Commission approved shifting pension investments toward fixed income at its Thursday, Oct. 22, meeting, according to minutes published by the Town of Suffield. Both investment motions passed 5-0.

The first motion set a 50.5% target allocation to fixed income, with 50 basis points, or half a percentage point, to be raised for cash while reducing equities. The commission also authorized transferring the allocated 5% of equity to fixed income if the 30-year Treasury exceeds a threshold of 5.75 by Thursday, Nov. 12. The minutes do not specify a unit for that threshold and assign Focus Partners to monitor it.

The minutes describe the pension plan as close to 100% funded. Assets totaled $51.675 million at the close of business Wednesday, Oct. 21, down from $52.6 million Tuesday, June 30.

Changes to vesting or contractual benefits would require collective bargaining approval, according to the minutes. The commission's next regular meeting is scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 12, at 5 p.m.
