Printmaking with Wood: An In-depth Introduction with Margot Rocklen and Shirley Bernstein

Join printmakers Margot Rocklen and Shirley Bernstein for two in-depth demonstrations in the art of woodcut printmaking. Margot will demonstrate mokuhanga (Japanese woodblock), explaining image conception, color separation, block preparation and cutting, paste consistency, kento registration, and how to achieve the delicate line and tonal/color gradations characteristic of the Japanese print. Shirley will demonstrate Western style woodcut, including wood engraving and wood cutting, both of which can be printed with or without a press. Multiple color images and registration methods will be addressed, as well as the use of tools, blocks, inks and papers.

Students will receive informative handouts and discover the unique history and printing process of each method. A sign-up sheet will be available for those eager to make their own blocks and prints during a two-day workshop to follow, with dates and times to be announced according to interest.
