Friends of Fort Trumbull-explore the “Outdoor Museums"
Museums are not just elegant, stately buildings. Check out the Outside Museums!

During the 2018 series on Musings on Museums, the Friends of Fort Trumbull have focused on one of the roles museums play in preserving the historic memory of mankind. On September 27, in a new twist on “museums”, we will explore the concept of Graveyards and gravestones as a type of an “Outdoor” Museum. The Friends will welcome to the Fort, Ruth Shapleigh-Brown, the founder and Director of the Association for Gravestone Network.
Ruth first became interested in burial ground preservation and gravestone studies in the mid-1980’s, while tracing her early ancestors’ family plots in Maine. Ruth has said, “Studying these historic artifacts and protecting them is a way to interact with history and those who came before us.”
From 1998 to 2013, she has received many community awards, the most recent being the National Preservation Award of 2013 from the DAR. Ruth’s efforts are supported by the State Archaeologist and State Historic Preservation Office at the Connecticut Commission on cultural and Tourism.
