Community Corner

Soup and Soul Begins Feb. 17

Interdenominational Lenten reflection brings unity among churches

NIANTIC – The classic Christian text The Practice of the Presence of God by Brother Lawrence will be the topic of conversation when members and friends of two different churches come together for reflection during Lent. Soup & Soul is held annually by Niantic Community Church but this year will be an interdenominational offering, when St. John’s Episcopal Church becomes a part of this gathering.

NCC is a Federated church, part Methodist and part United Church of Christ. St. John’s is an Episcopal denomination. And the book that will be used for discussion each week is by a lay brother from a Carmelite monastery, one of many Roman Catholic Religious orders. Interesting reading is sure to inspire thought filled discussion.

“I’m excited by this neighborly approach to a spiritual journey,” said Rev. Dr. John A. Nelson, Pastor of NCC. “We certainly know that Lent doesn’t belong to any one church: it’s a wonderfully rich season for all Christians. The opportunity to explore Lent not only with friends but with neighbors from a sister tradition will add a wonderful depth to our discussions.”

Both churches will take turns hosting the program which will begin at NCC and will alternate locations each of the five weeks. Volunteers provide a simple meal of soup and bread and take turns leading discussion with St. John’s Rector, Fr. Anthony Dinoto guiding the first session.

“We look forward to gathering with the folks of Niantic Community Church during the Lenten Season through the “Soup and Soul” series,” said Fr. Dinoto.
