UPDATE: State Police ID 2 People Killed in I-95 Accident Involving 8 Vehicles

The accident shut down Interstate 95 in Old Lyme for eight hours on Saturday and a total of eight people were hospitalized.

Two people are confirmed dead. Eight people were hospitalized. Eight vehicles including two tractor-trailers were involved, which included 14 people total.

Interstate 95 was shut down in both directions for eight hours Saturday.

This all was a result of a horrific accident on I-95 near Exit 70 northbound in Old Lyme at 5:40 a.m.

Hilda Thomas, 61, of Abingdon, Maryland and Stacy Lockhart, 38, of Selma, Alabama were killed in the crash, reports WTNH News 8.

Most of the others taken to local hospitals were for minor injuries, News 8 reports, but one other serious injuries was also reported.

Alexander Anthony Eliseo, 73, of East Haven was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital to treat “suspected minor injuries,” the Middletown Press reports.

Two accidents were reported in the same area early Saturday about 90 minutes apart. One occurred on the northbound side and one on the southbound side.

Arturo Paez, 62, of Stratford was seriously injured in one accident, News 8 reported earlier on Saturday.

Paez’s tractor-trailer struck a guardrail and concrete bridge before bursting into flames. He was flown to a local hospital.

WFSB-TV’s Twitter page said at the time police declared “a mass casualty scene because of the number of victims involved.”

State Police are investigating the cause of the accident. The highway completed reopened late Saturday evening.
