Charges against a man accused of finding a lost bag of nearly $5,000 in tax money and keeping it have been dropped by state prosecutors.

TRUMBULL, CT — Charges against a Trumbull man accused of finding a lost bag of nearly $5,000 cash in town tax money and keeping it have been dropped by state prosecutors after the man made full restitution to the town, the Connecticut Post reports.

According to the Connecticut Post, Robert Withington recently turned over a check for $4,761.04 to the town tax office. Police said Withington initially claimed "finders keepers" when officers discovered he had the money asked him to give it back.

In August, police said Withington, 56, had been charged with third-degree larceny following a lengthy investigation into the theft of several thousands of dollars in town tax receipt funds.

The bag was marked with the bank's insignia and contained documents that identified the town as the owner of its contents, police said.

The investigation revealed the bag was accidentally dropped on the ground outside the bank and picked up by Withington, who thought he did not have to return it to its owner, according to police.
