Constitution Week: Did You Know ...? Patriots buried in Trumbull

Constitution Week, September 17-23, commemorates the signing of the Constitution of the United States.  The U.S. Constitution is the oldest constitution still in active use in the world today and is the basic document of our republic, which protects the individual liberties of all citizens through written law.

American colonists fought, sacrificed, and died to establish and preserve the freedoms now guaranteed to us by the Constitution of the United States.  Some of our patriots are buried in Trumbull cemeteries.  David Nichols (1741-1823) served in the 4th Brigade (buried at Riverside Cemetery, Old Mill Rd); Nathan Nichols Sr (1709-1789) served on the Committee to furnish supplies for the Continental Army (buried at Unity Burying Ground); Elijah Hawley (1762-1846) and his brother Thomas (1759-1850) served under Captains Birdsey, Coe, and Nichols during the Revolution (buried at Long Hill Burying Ground).  These men and many more like them fought for our freedoms and enabled the Constitution to become a reality.

The DAR perpetuates the memory and spirit of the men and women who won American independence.  The group also helps maintain historic state properties.  Any woman over 18 who can prove an ancestor served in the American Revolution is a prospective member.  For more information on the DAR go online at http://www.sarahriggshumphreysDAR.org
