TRUMBULL, CT — First Selectman Vicki Tesoro said Trumbull will observe National Gun Violence Awareness Day, also known as "Wear Orange Day," on Friday.

In a Facebook post, Tesoro noted Friday was "a day to raise awareness of the tragedies that take place too often in this country" relating to gun violence.

On this day, residents are encouraged to wear orange to "raise awareness about gun violence and honor the lives of gun violence victims and survivors."

According to Tesoro, "Wear Orange Day" was inspired by friends of Hadiya Pendleton, a 15-year-old Chicago student who was killed by gunfire in 2013.

"Her friends honor her life by wearing orange on her birthday," Tesoro said on Facebook. "Orange was Hadiya's favorite color and orange is also the color hunters wear to announce themselves to other hunters for safety."
