It’s not too late to get your pneumonia vaccinations! Pneumonia vaccinations are available at the Trumbull Health Department year round, not just during the flu season. The Health Department offers Prevnar 13 and Pneumovax 23 for those over 65 years of age and older because they are at increased risk for pneumococcal disease. Doctors may also recommend these vaccines for people younger than 65 if they have certain diseases or conditions. (Prevnar 13 is a part of the infant/childhood series and usually given at the 2nd, 4th, 6th and 12-15 month visit).

Pneumococcal disease is an infection caused by a type of bacteria called Streptococcus pneumoniae. It is a serious infection and can be life-threatening. Symptoms of pneumococcal pneumonia include fever, cough, shortness of breath, and chest pain. About 1 million people in the U.S. have to seek hospital care due to pneumonia and about 50,000 people die from the disease each year. Pneumococcal disease can often be prevented with the pneumococcal vaccines. The vaccines are both safe and effective.
