TRUMBULL, CT — Members of the Police Commission refuted claims made by first selectman candidate Michael Herbst that a lack of financial support and engagement of officers by First Selectman Vicki Tesoro are responsible for an uptick in crime.

Herbst cited statistics from Tesoro's budget request that showed an increase in emergency calls for domestic violence, drug possession and sexual assault, according to the Trumbull Times.

Tesoro said that the numbers Herbst cited were from 2018 and for half the year the town ran under a budget approved by Tim Herbst, Herbst's son and former first selectman. Police Commission Chairman Ray Baldwin, a Democrat and Vice-Chairman Angelo Magliocco, a Republican issued a statement criticizing Herbst.
