Trumbull Attorney Pleads Guilty to Life Insurance Scheme

TRUMBULL, CT — A Trumbull attorney pleaded guilty to a conspiracy to defraud insurance companies.

The scheme is known as stranger-originated life insurance and involves helping elderly person sign up for multi-million dollar life insurance policies, according to the U.S. Attorney District of Connecticut office.
David Quatrella, 61, along with co-conspirators offered the promise of free life insurance for two years. He would then attempt to sell the policy and provide a share of proceeds for the insured, according to the U.S. Attorney office.

Quatrella recruited investors to finance the payment of premiums with the understanding they would earn a profit. Quatrella and his co-conspirators would fill out applications that contained false and misleading information, the U.S. Attorney office said in a release.

Quatrella personally profited about $272,000 as a result of the scheme. He pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and faces a maximum term of five years in prison.
