After successfully completing eight months of training at the Bridgeport Police Academy,
Trumbull police recruits Colin Markus and Jack Kingdon will continue their training, in the Field
Training phase, where they will ride with training officers who will instruct them on department
policies, rules and procedures, while exposing them to actual policing by responding to calls for
service. Marcus and Kingdon are required to complete a minimum of 400 hours of Field
Training to complete their certifications before they can work on their own.
The two new recruits are joining a department that is struggling to bring the agency up to full
staffing levels. The recruitment and hiring of Trumbull police officers has increasingly become a
difficult process, as the number of Trumbull police personnel continues to diminish. The
Trumbull Police Department is now operating with a shortage of sixteen (16) officers, leaving
the department down 20%, which includes nine (9) open positions, with five (5) officers still in training, and two (2) other officers out on long term absences. Part of this shortage is due to eight (8) officer resignations over the last two (2) years where those have moved on to serve at other police agencies.
