Trumbull Woman Sentenced for Filing False Tax Returns

Maria Pinheiro owns Dolphin's Cove Marina in Bridgeport. She was accused of not reporting more than $350k in cash receipts.

Trumbull resident Maria Pinheiro, 58 was sentenced to two months of imprisonment after she pleaded guilty to filing false tax returns.

Pinheiro owned the Dolphin’s Cove Marina, a seafood restaurant in Bridgeport.

According to court documents and statements made in court she handled all finances for the restaurant and deposited substantial amounts of cash receipts into her personal checking account. She failed to report it as income on federal income tax forms.

About $352,000 was deposited between 2007 and 2009. The tax loss was about $92,000.

As part of her plea agreement she agreed to pay back taxes, interest and penalties in the total amount of more than $243,000. She paid it off Monday.

Pinheiro was also sentenced to one year of supervised release and 100 hours of community service.
