U.S. Congressman Comforts Family of Slain Trumbull Native
Kevin Sutherland volunteered and later interned for Rep. Jim Himes. More details about the homicide have surfaced in the case.

U.S. Rep Jim Himes was among the people who were glad to hear a swift arrest had in the D.C. homicide case of Trumbull-native Kevin Sutherland.
“I hope this leads to justice and a swift resolution to the case,” Himes said on his official Facebook page.
Sutherland had served as an intern for Himes during 2013. Sutherland graduated from American University.

Himes had met with Sutherland’s family in Connecticut to offer support, according to Roll Call. He said he first met Sutherland in 2010 when he volunteered on his congressional campaign.

Himes spoke on the House of Representatives floor about Sutherland.
“I think there is a chance that 20 years from now Kevin might’ve served in this chamber, now that’s not going to happen,” he said. “But Kevin’s spirit of openness, optimism, that spirit must live on in this chamber.”
Sutherland was stabbed 20 times, including deep wounds to the chest area, according to a report obtained by Capitol Justice. An arrest warrant details a brutal assault, including witness reports.
Arrestee Jasper Spires allegedly robbed two others during the incident as well. A knife was found in a trash can near the scene.
