Contractor Charged for Skipping out on Vernon Job

A contractor was arrested on a warrant.

VERNON, CT — A contractor has been charged with a crime for allegedly taking a hefty deposit on a job in Vernon and never performing the work.

On Monday, Vernon police arrested Robert Murphy and charged him with second-degree larceny, a report indicates.

Vernon police said they received a complaint in October of 2017 from a resident who hired Murphy to do some home improvement work. Murphy was using the business name Signature Home Improvement, police said.

Murphy was a licensed home improvement contractor at the time. The resident gave Murphy $10,710 to do the work on Oct. 18, 2016, police said.

Murphy didn't perform the work or deliver any material for the job. Murphy also failed to return the resident's money upon request.

Murphy posted a $10,000 non-surety bond and is scheduled to appear in court in Rockville on March 27, records indicate.
