VERNON, CT — The "green" cleaning materials used in the Vernon public school system adhere to state standards amid concerns over the Coronavirus, but school officials are also taking extra precautions to ensure even the quirkiest of areas remain clean.

That was the word from Superintendent of Schools Joseph Macary after Vernon officials received a memo from state officials this week about cleaning materials.

Connecticut went "green" with legislation passed by state government in June of 2009. It required schools to have a green cleaning plan in place as well as use green cleaning products only.
Former Gov. M Jodi Rell actually signed the legislation into law at Vernon Center Middle School on June 11, 2009.

Macary said there are some exceptions, especially in the kitchens and cafeterias, but added "the schools are fine" with maitainng the use of the green cleaners.

"What we use overall is up to standard," Macary added.

Macary said some extra efforts are being taken in school building hallways, where every railing is being regularly whiped down. The same goes for doorknobs, he said.

Macary said a bulk order of cleaning wipes has come in and they will be used to wipe down the keyboards on all Chomebooks used in the classrooms and at home.

All steps are "precautionary," Macary said. There have been no reported cases of Coronavirus in Connecticut as of early this week. Several states across the United States have reported positive cases.
