Could the South Carolina Cannonballs Found After Hurricane Matthew Have a Connecticut Connection?

Well ... Connecticut did have a presence near Charleston, a scholar said.

VERNON, CT — So could the Civil Warn cannon balls unearthed on a South Carolina beach by Hurricane Matthew have a Connecticut connection?

Well, there were Union soldiers from the state located near Charleston, the director of the New England Civil War museum said.

The cannonballs were found on Folly Beach near Charleston on Sunday as a result of beach erosion from the storm, The Charleston County Sheriff's Department said.

They were disposed of over the weekend by military personnel, according to the sheriff's office. The area around Charleston Harbor was fiercely contested during the Civil War and Battery Wagner, made famous in the Civil War movie "Glory" is nearby.

New England Civil War Museum Director Matthew Reardon said the 6th and 7th Connecticut regiments were in South Carolina in 1862 and 1863.

So was the 1st Connecticut Light Artillery regiment, he said.

The museum is based in Vernon.

The Sherriff's office said on social media that the discovery is still being researched.
