CT Envirothon champions to represent Connecticut

The 31st CT Envirothon state competition has a winner, and it’s a team of five students from Nonnewaug High School, Woodbury, Connecticut. The five students will represent the State of Connecticut at the National Conservation Foundation-Envirothon competition held at Tantramar (Sackville), New Brunswick, Canada, on the campus of Mt. Allison University. This international competition will take place July 23 – 29th.

The CT Envirothon is an annual competition for high school students to test their knowledge and skills in the topics of: aquatics, soils, wildlife, forestry, and a current issue that changes yearly. This year’s current issue is Adapting to Climate Change. On May 18th, 26 teams from 16 schools competed against one another at the Kellogg Environmental Center in Derby, Ct. Other top scoring teams were from Lyman Hall High School (2nd), Housatonic Valley School (3rd) The top scoring teams for each of the five topics were Soils: Housatonic Valley High School, Aquatics: Nonnewaug High School, Forestry: Northwestern Regional High School no. 7, Wildlife: Housatonic Valley High School, and Current Issue: Marvelwood School.

In Connecticut, the CT Envirothon is also sponsored by CT DEEP, USDA NRCS, and other stakeholder groups in addition to the Conservation Districts. An all-volunteer member executive board and steering committee manages the program. In addition, educators and specialists from various environmental organizations across Connecticut provide technical expertise for training workshops with the students and educational materials.
