CT Water: Employee Imposters Tried to Get Access to Area Home

Scammers posing as CT Water employees tried to get into a Vernon home.

VERNON, CT — Connecticut Water Co. is issuing a scam warning for its coverage area after a Vernon customer said two men who tried to get into his home Thursday by claiming they were working for the utility.

Connecticut Water officials said the customer asked the men for identification, and, when they were not able to produce a Connecticut Water ID, he became suspicious and did not allow them into the home.

He then contacted Connecticut Water, and the Vernon Police Department was called, utility officials said.

Connecticut Water officials said that, through its Customer Protection Program, e-mails are sent out with a photo of its employee for scheduled appointments.

Connecticut Water issues the following statement:

"The program is called 'Be Sure Before Your Open The Door.' When someone says they are from a utility and knocks on the door without an appointment people need to be extra vigilant. Every Connecticut Water employee carries a photo ID, which they are happy to produce when asked by a customer.
Further, if a customer has any concerns about whether a person is a Connecticut Water employee, the work they are there to perform, or something just doesn’t seem right, they should feel free to contact the Company at 1-800-286-5700 to confirm the person is an employee and the nature of the work they will be performing. If they have immediate concerns they should feel free to contact their local police."
