Gas Tank Falls Over Near Vernon Commuter Lot: Update

A tank fell over and began leaking off Route 30 in Vernon on Tuesday afternoon.

VERNON, CT — Vernon Police and firefighters rushed to the commuter lot near the Interstate-84, Exit 65 interchange after a propane gas tank fell and began leaking.

A contractor had parked the truck in the lot and was attempting to shift the 1,000-pound tank and it fell over, causing a valve to crack police said.

The incident was reported just before noon and police were still at the scene at 3 p.m. The leak was "uncontrolled" for about two hours, police said. Firefighters had to hose the tank down until the leak stooped, police said.

Route 30 was closed between Dobson and Merline roads until 3:15 p.m., police said.

State police and the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection were also at the scene.

Some people who were in the area and a nearby business were evaluated but no one was transported to a hospital, police said.

Children at a nearby daycare facility were dismissed via a detour,police said.
